CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Mira Loma High School students shared their talents, research and aspirations during the school’s annual World Fair and Middle Years Program (MYP) Personal Project Exhibition. The event combined academic learning with global perspectives, giving students a space to explore real-world topics in creative ways.

Now in its 12th year, the World Fair is a key part of Mira Loma’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program. Students conducted in-depth research on industries, traditions and innovations from around the world, creating interactive booths and performances to share their findings. Topics ranged from candy production and aviation to Japanese folklore and the film industry.

Rachel Volzer, a Mira Loma teacher and the World Fair event coordinator, explained that the project encourages students to apply global thinking to topics they care about.

“Students develop their own inquiry questions, conduct research and then present what they have learned in ways that engage their peers,” Volzer said.

Alongside their academic work, students had opportunities to connect with one another and reflect on their interests, identities and goals.

The event encouraged students to celebrate culture while exploring new ideas that link classroom learning to real-life experiences.

Ahmad, an 11th-grader who recently moved from Afghanistan, said the event left a strong impression.

“In Afghanistan, school events like this were rare. Here, I saw booths that inspired me to think about my future. It was amazing,” Ahmad said.

Mohammad, a 10th-grader, found inspiration at the cinema booth.

“Seeing other students perform with confidence reminded me of my dream of acting. It gave me hope that I could do something like that in the future,” Mohammad said.

Students behind the scenes also gained important experience. Ginger, a 10th-grader and a logistics team member, reflected on the challenges and rewards of group collaboration.

“We learned that when everyone shares ideas and works together, the project is stronger,” Ginger said.

Through thoughtful projects and collaboration, students took the lead in shaping the event, leaving with new ideas, skills and experiences to build upon.
