New Los Rios Police Chief Larry Savidge

CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - It is my pleasure to introduce myself to you all as the new Chief of the Los Rios Police Department. I am honored to have been selected for this post, and to have the opportunity to return to my native California and work in a community as vibrant and diverse as the Sacramento region.

I was drawn to Los Rios, in part, because my story is not dissimilar from that of many of the students we serve. My mother came to this country from Mexico without documentation while she was pregnant with me, and I saw first-hand the impact that fear and uncertainty can have on a family. The values I learned as a young man growing up in Southern California - compassion, kindness and respect - have guided me as an adult and throughout my career in the United States Air Force and in law enforcement. Most recently, I had the privilege of serving as the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police for a large, multiple campus community college in Charleston, South Carolina. While I enjoyed my time in Charleston, California is home. When the opportunity arose to come back west, especially to work at an organization as well-respected as Los Rios, I jumped at it.

We live in extraordinary times. There is an unprecedented and warranted focus on social justice issues in our community, especially in light of recent events. The discussions happening in Sacramento mirror those occurring throughout the rest of the country, and social media affords everyone the opportunity to amplify their voice to start a movement. Transparency and equity have never been more important, and my commitment to you is that we will ensure that these values are a part of everything we do in the Los Rios Police Department. I strongly believe in the principles of Community-Oriented Policing, a philosophy and organizational strategy that encourages law enforcement to work in partnership with the communities we serve.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be spending as much time as possible at each of our campuses, meeting students and staff and getting to know our community. I hope to have a chance to meet many of you in person. I would also encourage you to reach out to me directly at if you have any questions about me, my background or the Los Rios Police Department in general.

I look forward to working closely with all of you to keep our colleges safe and secure, and to build and promote a culture of trust and understanding on our campuses.
