Government Job Available: Part-Time Animal Services Officer

The City of Citrus Heights’ General Services Department is seeking a part-time animal services officer. Officers provide enforcement of various animal services regulations; investigate complaints regarding nuisance, stray, uncontrolled, dangerous, wild, or diseased animals and issue appropriate citations; transport animals to a City-designated shelter; prepare written reports for prosecution of local ordinances and state law; provide public information and education to citizens and community groups regarding animal services; and perform other duties related to humane animal protection and services.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ experience with the full range of animal services field services and will possess a commitment to providing exceptional customer service. Candidates would be part of a 24-hour operation that may require irregular work shifts including evening, weekend, and holiday shift assignments; emergency overtime and on-call/stand-by availability and call back as required; and to change work periods and work days dependent on operational requirements of the City. Scheduled hours/days may vary depending upon the needs of the City. May require wearing of department approved uniform and related equipment in performance of duties. Part-time position up to 20 hours flexibly scheduled based on the needs of the organization.

Minimum qualifications include the ability to assess animal behaviors and choose an effective course of action, the ability to analyze, recommend, and communicate appropriate solutions to complex and/or sensitive problems, and the ability to think clearly and act quickly and decisively in emergency situations while remaining calm. Candidates must possess the ability to listen actively, use effective questioning techniques, express themselves in a clear and understandable manner when speaking, and effectively communicate with a variety of individuals, groups, and community organizations.

The ideal candidate also must possess knowledge of animal services equipment used to handle, capture, or destroy animals under stressful or emergency situations; knowledge of methods and techniques of conducting and documenting field investigations, including collecting and cataloging evidence; and knowledge of pertinent local, State, and Federal laws, codes, ordinances, City functions, policies, rules, and regulations.
