Women’s Soccer
With a suffocating defense that rarely allowed their opponent past midfield, the FLC women’s soccer team won their third consecutive home game, defeating Modesto JC at Falcon Stadium Tuesday afternoon, 4-0. Freshman Keionna Claypoole scored the Falcons’ only first-half goal on a breakaway in the 20th minute, though there were several other missed opportunities that could have resulted in goals.
In the second half, sophomore Karina Torres padded the Falcons’ lead with a goal on a free kick from 25 yards out, then added an assist two minutes later when she found Hannah O’Donnell for a goal. Freshman Kaylin Johnson finalized the scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 88th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Aubrey Hall was outstanding again as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
The Falcons remain in second place in the Big 8 behind Diablo Valley (whom they tied, 0-0, on Sept. 20) at 4-1-1 and improved their overall season record to 9-1-1. They’ll play at Sierra College on Friday afternoon before returning home next Tuesday for the first of four straight home matches.
Men’s Soccer
Second place in the Big 8 standings was up for grabs when LRCCD sister-college Cosumnes River visited FLC last night. The bipartisan crowd was treated to an intense match that went 62 minutes before a goal was scored. It was then that Falcon freshman Santiago Peniche broke the scoreless tie with his third goal of the season, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. With the win, the Falcons find themselves in sole possession of 2nd place in the Big 8 (behind Santa Rosa) at 2-1 and are now 5-2-2 overall. They’ll host Modesto on Friday at Falcon Stadium at 4:00 pm.
