Men’s Baseball

With a ‘bye’ week in their Big 8 schedule, the FLC baseball team had to travel to Susanville on Tuesday to find a non-conference opponent. The long trip must have been just what the Falcons needed as they defeated the Cougars, 14-4. Starting pitcher Grant Dragmire pitched five strong innings, followed by relievers Austin Beard, Zach Martin, and Shane Gustafson. Designated hitter Greg Vaughn hit his first home run of the season, while Carson McCusker recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. He now has seven games this season in which he’s gotten three or more hits, and yesterday’s four RBI gave him 42 for the season (second in California).

The Falcons are off the rest of this week, then resume Big 8 play next week against Cosumnes River.

Women’s Softball

After her team played two of their best games of the season a week ago against Sierra and Delta (both ranked in the top 5 in California), FLC softball coach Jenna Alexander was optimistic her team had turned a corner and could compete with anyone. But Tuesday afternoon the Falcons reverted back to previous form as they lost at Modesto, 3-1. The Pirates entered the game with a 7-17 record and were the only team in the Big 8 the Falcons had defeated in the first round of play. None of that mattered on Tuesday as the Falcons failed to capitalize against a very hit-able pitcher, recording just five hits. McKenna Rickles pitched well enough to win, allowing just six hits (none for extra bases), and the defense played a clean game with no errors, but it was the bats that let the Falcons down.

Men's Tennis

The Falcons played a make-up non-conference match at Modesto on Tuesday afternoon (originally rained out on Feb 3) and came home with a 7-2 victory over the Pirates. Sophomores Praj Ta and Max Hennessy were double winners for the Falcons as they both won in singles and combined to win their #2 doubles match.
