MARTINEZ, CA (MPG) - Following the completion of the Community Downtown Tree Survey, the City has now identified the preferred tree species to replant in priority areas of the downtown where older trees had previously been removed. City crews will commence with the replanting phase of the Downtown Street Tree Program this week on the following planned schedule (which is subject to change depending on whether issues with underground utilities or old roots and debris are encountered during the dig outs):
- Tuesday, February 16th: Preparatory work on eight (8) tree wells on the 500 Block of Main Street, four (4) each on the north and south sides of the block.
- Wednesday, February 17th: Planting of four (4) Crape Myrtles and four (4) Greenspire Lindens, as shown in the attached Downtown Tree Replanting Map Phase I (500/700 Block).
During these dates and times, only limited impacts on traffic and pedestrians are anticipated. The tree plantings are part of a phased approach to tree management in the downtown area, which will continue to involve ongoing priority removal of hazardous trees and subsequent replanting with new varieties of recommended replacement tree stock as tree selections are finalized. Future planned tree removals and tree replantings will be announced in advance as they are determined and scheduled.
As a reminder, the City has created a comprehensive released a Downtown Street Tree Program webpage with information about the program’s progress, including the recent Community Downtown Tree Survey Results and the Interactive Map which shows plans for the initial replanting phase.
