CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Vietnam War veterans and supporters stood firm as the mercury rose on Carmichael Memorial Day Observances last weekend. The community tradition continued on one of the hottest days recorded so far this year.

Previously an occasion for big crowds, 2021 observances observed ongoing assembly rules. Fewer than 40 supporters (including a Scout color guard) sweated out the service in 100-plus Fahrenheit degrees at Koobs Nature Area. Others watched a livestream on Facebook.

Iraq War Army veteran Matt Cecatto spoke on the value of war service. “We stand here remembering the young men from this community who died for us in a strange place,” said the Purple heart recipient. “We extend our gratitude to everyone who has served. There is no greater, more selfless act. It’s my solemn duty as a veteran -- who came home – to ensure that we don’t forget any name of anyone who gave their life.”

Carmichael rock artist Todd Morgan led the gathering in the patriotic “America” and the Vietnam-era pop anthem “Wonderful World.” Boy Scout Troop 386 bugler Edward Stach (15) played Taps. With the ringing of a bell, the 15 heroes immortalized by a Koobs Nature area plaque were named. These young men attended Carmichael’s La Sierra High School and died serving in the Vietnam War.
