I am heart-broken over the gruesome and senseless murder of a Carmichael man outside his own home last night. The victim has been a close friend of my family for many generations and while every loss of life is hard, this one particularly hits close to home.

I am working closely with the Sheriff’s department to learn more about the situation but can confirm the perpetrator was a homeless individual suspected of being under the influence at the time of the murder. They have been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and are being held without bail. We will continue to inform the public as additional details become available.

In the immediate, I want to state clearly that this level of crime will never be acceptable in our community. I know my constituents are frustrated over the recent increase in crime in the City and County, and I’m frustrated too. The number of unhoused on our streets has become a direct threat to our ability to create thriving, secure and peaceful neighborhoods throughout the County.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family.
