Volunteers assemble to plant trees at Cameron Park Elementary School.

CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Green-fingered volunteers have planted new trees to enhance playground shade and air quality at Cameron Ranch Elementary School, Carmichael.

The effort was part of the Carmichael Kiwanis Clubs’ Giving Tree project, which aims to augment Sacramento’s green canopy by establishing trees in schools and public places. Club members completed their recent dig-in, helped by school staff, student families and San Juan Unified School District boosters.

Twelve oak and zelkova saplings were donated by the Sacramento Tree Fountain. Their location promises future shade in an area used for sport and student gatherings.

School Principal Aliceon Sloss said pupils were committed to the new trees. “Each grade level will adopt one and be its guardian,” explains Sloss. “They’ll make sure their tree is watered and looked after, as it matures. We have a Garden of Learning Program so students understand the benefits trees provide. They’ve already thought of great names for the saplings – like Tree of Wisdom and Tree of Hope.

“We’re all excited to know the volunteers’ efforts will benefit many generations of our school community.”

Giving Tree Project Sponsors include SMUD, Coalition for Clean Air, the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael and San Juan Unified School District. Learn about the program at www.kiwanisclubofcarmichael.com
