CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Carmichael restaurateur Ismael Pantoja has received a “Small Business of the Month” award from Assemblyman Josh Hoover.
Recognition comes on the eve of 19th anniversary celebrations for Pantoja’s two-restaurant operation.
Mexican American Pantoja, 53, runs Rey Azteca and Cantina Azteca eateries, both on Fair Oaks Boulevard. The two enterprises together employ 37 workers.
The owner, staff and Carmichael Chamber of Commerce directors welcomed the legislator during his whistle-stop visit last week. Hoover’s framed resolution, now proudly displayed in the Cantina lobby, recognizes commitment to service and community.
“People like Ismael make my district a better place,” said the assemblyman. “It’s challenging to run a small business and he’s doing an incredible job.”
Hoover applauded innovations beyond authentic Mexican cuisine. Mariachi musicians serenade Friday diners. A karaoke hour follows. Alternating Wednesdays bring trivia contests.
The Cantina kitchen offers vegan options, plus American burgers and sandwiches. A weekday happy hour discounts drinks and appetizers. The Pantoja family’s Cinco de Mayo festival is shared with the whole community.
“We’ve had to think outside the box,” noted the businessman. “The pandemic was a terrible time for us. Thank God, we’re still here and business is slowly coming back. This award makes us feel appreciated.”
