CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Fallen heroes were honored at Carmichael’s Vietnam Monument on Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day). The 57-year-old tradition of community remembrance continued with flags, speeches and prayers in the Earl J. Koobs Nature Area.

More than 100 supporters, including Gold Star families, Kiwanis Club members and Scouts, gathered for observances. Speaker was Matthew Ceccato, a Purple Star veteran of Middle East conflict who now heads Congressman Ami Bera’s staff.

Scouts raise the flag as commemorations begin on Memorial Day, May 26.

The graves of war dead, said Ceccato “tell tales of heartbreak that make us richer as a nation.”

“On a day like today, we stop and think of those we served with. In my case, some may have died in Baghdad. But their souls are here,” Ceccato said.

At least 15 graduates of Carmichael’s La Sierra High School died in the Vietnam War. As their names were read, a bell chimed for each young man. Eagle Scout bugler Edward Stach and law enforcement chaplain Mike Koons played Echo Taps.

The Vietnam Monument plaque recalls La Sierra High School graduates who died in Vietnam War service.

Heroes commemorated by the monument are Robert D. Anderson, Mark W. Burchard, Robert S. Byrnes, Jerry Cowsert, Kenneth R. Escott, Gary R. Field, Herbert Frenzell, Frank Thornburg, Ralph Guarienti, Larry H. Morford, Thomas C. Pigg, Randall B. Rainville, Kim Richins, Jeffry Tharaldson and Robert A. Willis.

The Earl J. Koobs Nature Area and Vietnam Monument are located at 5325 Engle Road, Carmichael. For information on public access dates, visit www.kiwanisclubofcarmichael.com/events.
