SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - The 19th Teagarden Jazz Festival: for Young Musicians will be held 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Feb. 7 in Capistrano Hall at Sacramento State. The joy of New Orleans-style jazz is at the heart of this jazz combo festival, which is dedicated to fostering a better appreciation of this classic American art form.
According to director Dr. Steve Roach, “the festival is believed to be the only educational student festival that is strictly dedicated to the performance of traditional jazz music”.
This year, scores of young musicians gather for performances, clinics and the opportunity to join a hosted Jam Session to take their skills to a new level.
The festival features Danny Coots as its guest artist. Coots is not only a Grammy winning drummer, but he is also the first drummer to be a guest artist at the festival. Danny has been drumming since he was 6 years old and recorded extensively in Nashville, New York and L.A.
While in Nashville, Danny joined the Jack Daniel’s Silver Cornet Band for five years and helped found the Titan Hot Seven. He and other clinicians will work with student bands onstage. Coot’s Jazz Workshop begins at 4:15 p.m. and his Guest Artist Closing Concert with the festival clinicians begins at 6 p.m. General admission to the entire festival is $15 (students admitted at no charge) and tickets are sold at the door. Free parking will be available in the adjacent parking structure.
