CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) – “Play ball” was the cry as more than 250 boys and girls cleated up at La Sierra Community Center fields last weekend. Carmichael’s Little League spring season is now officially in full swing.

Sporting uniforms of 23 teams, the kids raised banners and applauded last year’s champions. The National Anthem was rendered, Jimi Hendix-style, by School of Rock guitarist (and Little League player) Chance Burgman.

“The anthem’s a big part of baseball as an American sport,” enthused his mom, League President, Erin Burgman. “I’m so proud of Chance. When I heard him play Stars and Stripes – and the teams yelling in support - I nearly cried.”

Little Leaguers and families then cheered ceremonial first pitches.

The event marked the League’s 74th spring season. Ancestors of current athletes have rallied at Carmichael Park diamonds since the baby-booming 1950s.

“We love to keep the annual tradition,” explained event organizer Valerie Harper (whose son wears a Carmichael Pirates uniform). “It brings players and community together. Families love to see their kids in team colors with all their opponents. Having fun with rivals promotes good sportsmanship.”

The opening ceremony featured a parade of co-ed teams, ranging in age from preschoolers to teens. A School of Rock band performance and hot dogs occupied families until official games kicked off.

Carmichael Little League games will continue until mid-May. Anyone may join families and athletes at La Sierra Center sports fields at weekends. For information and recruitment details visit: www.carmichaellittleleague.org.
