CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Effie Yeaw Nature Center supporters recently gathered for cake and congratulations to mark the facility’s 50th anniversary. The June 18 celebration included presentations from Senator Roger Niello, Assemblyman Josh Hoover and County Supervisor Rich Desmond.

Desmond recalled growing up just streets from Ancil Hoffman Park, where the center is located. “Coming here was a huge part of my childhood,” he said.

“Adventures in the Effie Yeaw Preserve gave me, my friends – and three generations of my family – valuable experiences with nature. I hope families will have the same opportunities for at least another 50 years.”

Named for Carmichael teacher and conservationist Effie Yeaw, the center is a treasured Sacramento County resource.  Nature-viewing experiences abound in its 100-acre park, visited by almost 100,000 people annually.

The center’s educational programs are subsidized by American River Natural History Association fundraising. Public donations – and helpful dispensations from Sacramento County – keep the center, its programs and park operating.

“It’s a place of wonder in our community,” American River Natural History Association President Greg Dewey told supporters. “And with the community’s support, we’ll have many more years of wonder ahead.”
