CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Carmichael and Fair Oaks communities will this Saturday, Nov. 7, recall fallen heroes at Patriots Park.

The event will this year add a 16th name to the park’s Wall of Honor. More than 60 years after his death, Daniel Edward Bishop will be inducted for courage in action that cost his life.

The Carmichael man died in 1965 while piloting an Army helicopter on combat duty in Vietnam. Hit by ground fire, his and another Army helicopter crashed and exploded. Eight other crew members died in the same action.

The 26-year-old Warrant Officer is considered the first Carmichael man to perish during the Vietnam War. He was one of six brothers raised by James and Anna Bishop on Grant Ave. As a teenager, “Danny” Bishop played trombone with San Juan High bands and was a star of the school football team.

After graduation, he attended Humboldt State College and American River Junior College. Bishop was an apprentice electrician before he was drafted.

Two years into an exemplary Army career, the popular young man's death devastated his community. In recognition of his love for music, Carmichael Park District dedicated a band shell as the Daniel Bishop Memorial Pavilion for the Performing Arts.

District Advisory Board members recently voted to further honor the officer by adding his name to the community memorial in Patriots Park.

Bishop’s plaque will join those of fallen heroes on the neighborhood park's Wall of Honor. Monument honorees include military, police, CHP and fire-fighting personnel who died in service during Carmichael Park District’s 81-year existence.

Anyone may attend the annual Wall of Honor ceremony at 6827 Palm Ave, Fair Oaks. For information, visit:  www.carmichaelpark.com
